Angular Signals vs. NgRx: Is the Complexity Still Worth It?

For years, the "Standard Operating Procedure" for large-scale Angular applications was simple: npm install @ngrx/store. Inspired by Redux, NgRx provided a predictable, centralized way to manage state. But as we move further into the era of Angular 18 and 21, the landscape has fundamentally shifted.

The NgRx "Complexity Tax"

NgRx is built on the principle of Indirection. While indirection can be powerful for debugging extremely complex state transitions, it comes with a high cost in boilerplate and mental overhead.

1. The "Five-File" Problem

To implement a simple feature in a traditional NgRx architecture (like toggling a sidebar or updating a user preference), a developer often has to touch:

  • feature.actions.ts (Define the intent)
  • feature.reducer.ts (Update the state)
  • feature.selectors.ts (Retrieve the data)
  • feature.effects.ts (Handle side effects/API calls)
  • feature.facade.ts (Optional, but common abstraction layer)

This fragmentation makes code harder to follow, harder to refactor, and significantly slows down the onboarding of new developers.

2. The RxJS Learning Cliff

NgRx relies heavily on RxJS. While RxJS is an incredible tool for stream processing, using it for every single piece of state is overkill. Developers often get stuck in "operator hell," trying to figure out if they should use switchMap, mergeMap, or exhaustMap for a simple data fetch.

The ROI Challenge: When Does NgRx Actually Pay Off?

For standard CRUD applications, admin dashboards, and most SaaS platforms, the maintenance burden of NgRx far outweighs these benefits.

Why Signals are the Better Choice (Most of the Time)

Angular Signals represent a shift toward Fine-Grained Reactivity. They are built directly into the framework, offering a cleaner, more performant, and more intuitive way to manage state.

1. Drastic Reduction in Boilerplate

Compare an NgRx implementation to a Signal-based service:

NgRx Way:

Signals Way:

The code is easier to read, easier to test, and lives where it makes sense.

2. Precise Change Detection

Signals tell Angular exactly which parts of the UI need to update. This enables OnPush change detection by default and paves the way for a Zoneless Angular future. You get better performance without even trying.

3. Seamless RxJS Interop

You don't have to choose between Signals and RxJS. You can use toSignal() to convert your HTTP streams into reactive signals, giving you the best of both worlds: the power of RxJS for async events and the simplicity of Signals for state.

The Maintainability Verdict

In our experience at Bodark Systems, maintaining a Signals-based codebase is significantly cheaper over the long term. Debugging is more straightforward because the data flow is direct rather than hidden behind a maze of actions and effects.
